Indian Nuclear reactors withstand earthquake

earth-quakeAs several parts of North India were rocked by an earthquake of a magnitude of  5.7 on Monday making people panic and run out of their homes for safety,  the country’s nuclear power reactors in UP and Rajasthan remained unaffected by the earthquake.

Most parts of UP and Rajasthan were also rocked by the earthquake and fortunately, there were no reports of loss of life or property from the earthquake.

Nuclear Power Corporation of India Executive director N. Nagaich told media persons in Mumbai today that the reactors in these two states were running safely despite the earthquake the epicenter of which was traced to a distance of 500 km on Indo-Nepal border.

The official statement assumes significance as several sections of people in the country raised a hue and cry over the safety of the Indian nuclear reactors in the wake of the damage caused to Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
