Even as the venerable Gandhian and social activist Anna Hazare’s fast unto death entered the third day today and support continued to pour in from all corners of the country for his anti-corruption crusade, the government came down on his demands and sent the Union Minister Kapil Sibal for talks with Hazare.
Hazare was demanding the introduction of an effective Lok Pal Bill to tackle corruption in the country at all levels and the proposals for the Bill must be evolved with the suggestions from the people. Hazare has demanded a joint committee to make suggestions for the Bill with the participation of government representatives and representatives of the civil society.
After two rounds of discussions with Swami Agnivesh and Arvind Kejriwal, the two leading followers of Hazare, Kapil Sibal said the government will introduce the Bill during Monsoon session of Parliament.
“We have agreed on almost all issues but stumbling block remains on two issues. The first one is on issuing an official notification to form the committee and the other one is on making Hazare, the chairman of the committee,” Mr. Sibal told.
Sibal said he would hold talks again tomorrow with the Hazare men and resolve the remaining issues. Sibal suggested that Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee be made the chairman of the Joint Committee whereas the supporters of the Gandhian have asked Sibal to make Hazare its chairman. But, Hazare himself seems to be having no interest in taking over as the chairman.
