Chennai girl S Divyadarshini ranked first in the 2010 Civil Services Examinations for which the results were announced today by the Union Public Service Commission in New Delhi.

 

Hyderabad based senior IAS officer, Mr AK Mohanty’s daughter, Sweta Moanty secured the second rank while the third rank again went to Chennai based dentist Mr RV Varun Kumar. Mr. Kumar, who got the top rank among men, did his BDS from Ragas Dental College in Chennai and cleared the examination in his third attempt.

 

The UPSC has selected a total of 920 candidates, including 203 women for the Civil Services to serve the civil services of the country.

 

Divyadarshini took her BA BL (Hons) degree from Dr. Ambedkar Law University in Chennai and cleared the exam in her second attempt while Ms. Mohanty secured the second rank in her third attempt.

 

Divyadharshini said it was a pleasant surprise for her to know that she was the topper in the country. “I expected I would surely pass but never expected top rank,” she said.

 

The candidates who got the first 25 ranks consisted of 20 men and 5 women and the selected candidates included 28 physically challenged persons. The successful 2010 team included 14 orthopedically challenged, 5 visually impaired and 9 hearing impaired.

 

Out of the total number of 5, 47,698 candidates who applied, 2, 69,036 candidates took the Preliminary examination held on May 23, 2010. Out of them, 12,491 candidates were qualified for the main written examination that was held in October- November 2010.

 

2,589 candidates were asked to appear for the personality test from which 920 candidates were finally selected.
