The CBI today arrested 43-year old Kanimozhi, DMK MP and daughter of the former Tamil Nadu chief minister M. Karunanidhi along with Kalaignar TV chief Sharad Kumar on the orders of the CBI special judge OP Saini and sent them to the Tihar prison.
Kanimozhi was lodged in ward number 8 of the jail number 6 meant for women, according to R.N. Sharma, deputy inspector general for prisons.
Sharma said no VIP preferential treatment would be given to Kanimozhi and she will also have to follow the jail schedule along with the other high profile celebrities like the former chief of the Commonwealth Games Organizing Committee Suresh Kalmadi and former communications minister A. Raja.
Kanimozhi is entitled to have her preferred south Indian food and she can meet her relatives twice a week in the jail. Kanimozhi was also allowed to carry her medicines, books and reading glasses to the jail but the judge asked her to remove her nose-pin.
The court rejected the bail application saying that the accused are in conspiracy with each other for carrying out the scam and bail can’t be granted.
Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar were named as the co-conspirators by the CBI in its second charge sheet submitted to the court on April 25 in the 2G Spectrum case.
