Southern cities turn centers of child prostitutes

Five to six years ago, the age group of child prostitutes in India varied from 14 to 16 years but unfortunately this has now decreased to 10 to 14 years. In some cities, even the girls of 9 years old are being forcibly brought into the flesh trade by the unscrupulous mafia gangs.

Mumbai city, the financial capital of India, boasts of a bigger contribution to the trade with the girls starting from the age group of 9 being sold for anything between Rs.50, 000 and Rs.60,000 by pimps and brokers.

Stories abound that minor girls are being sold in auction centers treating them as easy disposables and most of the girls sold in the flesh trade markets hail from slums and poor families.

India, whose population has long ago crossed the mark of 100 Cr, has reportedly had 13 lakh children in its flourishing sex trade centers spread across from Kanyakumari to Kashmir and from Mumbai to Kolkata.

“The children are from the poor families but they are becoming the sex tools for the members of the rich families,” commented a representative of an NGO in Hyderabad. NGO activists say that southern states like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra have become high supply zones for prostitutes and especially child prostitutes. Reports indicate that Bijapur, Belgaum and Kolhapur in Karnataka have emerged as main supply centers for women and child prostitutes.

The main reason for the increase in child prostitution is illiteracy and lack of financial support to the families. Among the 9 lakh sex workers in India, 30 per cent of them are stated to be children and the number of child sex workers is increasing at an alarming rate of 8 to 10 per cent every year.
