Lightning raids on MalaysiaThe last 48 hours have witnessed lightning strikes Malaysia, Asia’s Lightning Capital.

6 Indonesians and 5 injured after the lightning struck during a heavy down pour in Malaysia. The first set of causalities occurred in a construction site in Shah Alam in Malaysia on Monday. The dead were Hazarin 929), Surady (31) and Mohd Nasir (46). The only injured identified was a woman Som (20).

The others said that all the workers left the site and returned to their quarters.  A worker said that there were 6 of them outside when the lightning struck of which 3 died and 3 injured.

In a yet another incident at Hulu Selangor, three more died because of the strike and the dead were identified as Rohmat (28), Sugiran (28) and Roni Dwi Jatmiko(29).

Malaysia is known as the Asia’s Lightning Capital and its capital Kuala Lumpur ranks 5th in the world in terms of Lightning density. The National Lightning Safety Institute of the United States said that Kuala Lumpur has 48.3 lightning strikes hit the ground for every square kilometer of real estate.

Malaysia’s most lightning prone areas including Subang, Bayan Lepas and Kluang are said to have up to 180 to 200 thunderstorm days a year. Compared to Florida — the lightning capital of the United Sates — which only has 90 to 110 thunderstorm days a year.
