A 24/7 helpline will be provided to the Indians, it will be stamped on their passports during the emigration process at Indian airports for those travelling to UAE. This helpline number will try and reach out to Indians in distress.
The toll free number (800 46342) will also be publicised at major shopping malls, retail chains and community organisations. This is the number of Indian Workers Resource Centre (IWRC), set up in Dubai by the Indian Embassy to help Indians in distress. They provide counselling in four key issues medical, legal, consular and social.
The measure was initialized, in the wake of recent suicide of an Indian Family in Ras Al Khaimah, last week. It may be noted that three decomposed bodies of an Indian family were found at their residence and they were Anil Kumar Nair (44), his pregnant wife Sreeja (31), and daughter Anusree (8). Nair was into trailers business and had taken around Dh 300, 000 in loans from banks to purchase trailers. One of his trailers was involved in a major accident in Oman, causing huge financial losses, which might have added to the woes. This family did not approach anybody for help, even the IWRC.
But after this incident there seems to be a sharp rise in the number of calls received at the centre, helpline agents provide information in all Indian languages. Basically Indians with huge financial difficulties are calling, but better help could be provided if they contact in the early stages. “When people end up in huge debts, it will be difficult to help them. They should seek help as soon as they feel that they are in trouble,” Lokesh from IWRC, urged.
