India today successfully test fired its indigenously built nuclear-weapons capable Prithvi-II ballistic missile for its full range of 350 km from the Launch Complex-III of the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, Orissa.
The 9-meter tall missile met all the mission objectives and hit the pre-fixed target in the Bay of Bengal with utmost degree of accuracy after a 500-second flight.
The flight path of the liquid-propelled and single stage Prithvi-II missile was tracked by a battery of sophisticated radars, electro-optical systems, telemetry stations and a ship located near the target point.
The missile, equipped with sophisticated inertial navigation, control and guidance system, can carry nuclear payload of 500-1,000 kg. This has already been inducted into the Armed Forces.
This is the second successful launch of the nuclear –capable missiles in the last three days. The defense scientists on Saturday successfully test fired the Hypersonic Shourya missile from the same launching pad.
