The Madurai police alerted by an ATM guard arrest a gang involved in multiple ATM stealing, they used fake ATM cards made by them and got access to many accounts. Police found a Sri Lankan national involved in the operations. Four have been arrested at the moment from Madurai, in Tamil Nadu, on Tuesday.
Sources said the gang consisted of computer-savvy thieves operating from Sri Lanka. Their modus operandi was that they used to install skimmer, a small device on top of ATMs at various locations, to steal the Personal Identification Numbers (PIN) and other data of customers, based on which they would make duplicate cards and withdraw money from the accounts.
Alert security personnel noticed a person drawing money from an ATM of a nationalized bank at Chinna Sokkikulam locality in the wee hours today in a suspicious manner. He alerted the cops. Teppakulam police rushed to the area and nabbed the person identified as B Ganapathy (33), hailing from Chennai. He had thrown away 20 numbers of ATM cards on the road on seeing the police. Police seized ATM cards, beside Rs 40,000 cash from him.
Based on his confession that his gang members have planned to sneak into Madurai to steal money using fake ATM cards, the special police team intercepted a car at Ring Road and arrested four people, including a Sri Lankan national. Police seized 80 fake ATM cards and Rs 2.5 lakh from them. Investigations were on to trap the entire gang and their kingpin, sources added. Police suspect millions of rupees might have been stolen by the gang using the fake ATM cards across the Country. Unconfirmed reports said the police seized Rs 40 lakh from the gang.
