Face Book, others ordered to remove objectionable content

Union Minster for IT and Communications Mr Kapil Sibal has asked the internet giants Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Face Book, Twitter and others to remove objectionable content from their social networking websites.

Stating this at a media conference in Delhi today, Sibal said that the government is unhappy with these sites as they have not responded to its request in September to remove such content with in a month.

“We can’t allow the objectionable content on those sites to linger on and we have asked them to fall in line and remove the content which is not acceptable going by the sensibilities of a large section of the communities in this country,” Sibal said.

He revealed that the Government has asked them as far back as September to evolve a self mechanism to monitor content and remove objectionable material within four weeks but they have not responded.

He also denied that the government has been trying to impose censorship of any sort on the internet firms. “It is not a gag,” he said, adding objectionable content is not acceptable. (JUBS)
