Anna & Co charged with a googly of land grab

The anti corruption crusader Anna Hazare, might be put in tight corners on this news, a difficult pill to swallow. The googly hurled at him by the Pune's charity commissioner in the Supreme Court may see the Gandhian in an embarrassing situation to answer. But the Apex Court questioned the authority for delay of 24 years to spot the discrepancy.

A document Supreme Court scanned on Tuesday reveals that a prime Pune plot belonging to the central Gandhi Smarak Nidhi was allegedly usurped by its Maharashtra chapter which handed it over to a realtor-developer for Rs 1.62 Cr in 1999. Hazare was a prominent member of Maharashtra Gandhi Smarak Nithi when it allegedly grabbed the land and sold it to the developer. The case has now been brought to the Supreme Court by Pune's charity commissioner after having been fought in district courts and the Bombay High Court.

The central Gandhi Smarak Nidhi informed a bench of Justices Altamas Kabir and S S Nijjar on Tuesday that the illegal transfer of title from the main unit to the state unit was done surreptitiously and illegally in 1977 and it came to light only in 1999 after a part of the property was handed over to Rohan Builders for a consideration of Rs 1,62,92,500.
