Osama makes history even after death, rated top story 2011

A media survey states that the story of killing the Al-Qaeda’s dreaded leader Osama Bin Laden was top on the charts. This year with many major events globally like the Japan’s triple quake, Prez Ghaddafi killing and more, the killing of Osama headed the list with maximum votes polled.

According to the Associated Press, the killing of Osama bin Laden was the top news story of the year. The raid by Navy SEALS on his hideout in Pakistan and the al-Qaeda leader’s death received the most first place votes in the AP’s annual poll.

If you remember then, even before President Obama pronounced Osama bin Laden dead, the Internet was buzzing with the news -- and in the hours that followed, the Web exploded as people celebrated and satirized the demise of public enemy No. 1.  As people around the world tweeted their excitement about bin Laden's death, Twitter said it had its highest sustained rate of tweets ever. Google Maps was flooded with enthusiasts using the popular mapping tool to find the exact spot bin Laden was killed. The Facebook page went viral in the aftermath of Obama's announcement.

The Associated Press’ poll of U.S. editors and news directors rated the death of bin Laden, as the top story. The al-Qaida leader, who masterminded the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, received 128 first-place votes out of 247 ballots cast for the top 10 stories. The Japan disaster was next, with 60 first-place votes. Placing third were the Arab Spring uprisings that rocked North Africa and the Middle East, while the European Union's financial turmoil was No. 4.
