'Mozart of Madras' A R Rahman turns 46

A R Rahman turns 46. The man spans two continents and his music breaks new groudns, every year.

During these years, Rahman served as a keyboard player and an arranger in bands like 'Roots'. What is the common strand running through the following four albums: Rockstar, Super Heavy, Rock The Tabla and Gems the Duets Collections?

That's right AR Rahman features in all these in one or another way. But the fact that all these are products of the year 2011 speaks volumes about the artist.

Mick Jaggar in Satyamev Jayate and 'rocking the tabla' with Hossam Ramzy, revving Ranbir Kapoor's angst in true Bollywood style to jamming with rock heavyweight. The Egyptian percussionist and composer to crooning in Gems - The Duets Collection, an album by Michael Bolton - he's done it all in 2011.

A nature potpourri for this Oscar winner. As of now, he's composing for a Bollywood fare Ekk Deewana Tha, a Steven Spielberg canvas - Welcome the People and a Kannada film Godfather in 2012.

2012 seems to have begun on an exciting note for Rahman. A new chapter in the history of musical collaboration with a unique endeavor titled "Classic Incantations" the maestro is set along with The German Film Orchestra Babels berg.

Rahman won the first Grammy of the pre-show at the Staples Center in the best compilation soundtrack for a motion picture category before his Jai Ho won in the best motion picture song category moments later. With 27 Filmfare Awards (14 Film fare Awards, 13 Film fare Awards South) to his credit, Rahman has achieved the status of legend in the lives of upcoming singers who dream to work with the composer, at least once. Rahman poses with his IIFA trophies. His extensive body of work for film and the stage earned him the nickname "the Mozart of Madras". Times places World's most Influential people in one the list of AR Rahman. The UK based World Music magazine Songlines named him one of 'Tomorrow's World Music Icons' in August 2011.

The musician got his first big break in Mani Ratnam's Roja and later he composed for many films in the south.

Allah Rakha Rahman, born as AS Dileep Kumar is an Indian composer, singer-songwriter, record producer, musician, multi-instrumentalist and philanthropist.
