Doctors strikes would be illegal and unconstitutional

The doctors across India have called for steth down. Indian Medical Association's day-long strike today evoked good response as all Gods in white coats gave up their their services today.

With doctors in India ignoring “Code of Ethics and Regulations,” patients at many hospitals reportedly faced severe problems.  Notably, yhe highest association dedicated to medicos called this strike against UPA's decision of setting up National Commission of Health.

Irked by the act of the doctors, an NGO - People for Better Treatment,  approached the highest court of law in the country, the Supreme Court to get a stay on the bandh. The apex court gave a stay on the strike stating that it was too late. Nevertheless, the court issued notice that doctors going on strike would be illegal.

Petitioner stated that the strike

  • Violates Hippocratic Oath and other provisions of Medical Council of India (MCI)
  • Violates code of ethics and regulations, principles such as 'patients must not be neglaected,' and 'obligations to the sick.'
  • Doctors strike earlier proved disastrous for the poor patients

The petitioner has urged the Supreme Court to hold that doctors strike would be illegal. The court, which heard the petition, issued notice to the Centre holding doctors strike illegal hereafter.

Pains of poor patients:

AndhraWishesh team spoke to patients at Osmania General Hospital. This is what they had to say on doctors' strike: “I have right to get my health checked. How can doctors ignore us?” said Pullaih who was sitting under a tree on the hospital premises. Lachchamma said: “Sir please tell doctors to check my grandson's health. He's been vomiting and not eating anything.” There were, in fact, scores to unveil their painful episodes waiting for the turn to get the steths run on this heart.
