Enduring the occasional rains, Om Shanti Sharma sits at Jantar Mantar in Delhi and prays so her daughter would be able to marry none other than Rahul Gandhi, the General Secretary of the Congress Party. The mother is also willing to shell out Rs 15 crore as dowry if Rahul Gandhi is ready for the proposal.
Wearing a simple plain yellow sari, Sharma has been fasting since 4 days and vowed silence (maun vrata) till Rahul Gandhi accepts her proposal. A placard that stays, silently, behind her has the letters “Rahul Gandhi se apni beti ke rishtey ki maang' printed on it.
The card also says that the woman hails from Rajasthan and that she wants her share in property from her in-laws and family. Sharma also refuses to write anything to communicate. “She just sits there, praying”, says Santosh Murat Singh who also is a protestor at Jantar Mantar. He is battling to prove his existence after his relatives have declared him dead.
Police however say that Sharma could be a mentally unstable woman who has not sought any permission from the police nor has submitted any untertaking related to her protests. Additional DCP of New Delhi range KC Dwiwedi has refused to comment of the issue.
