Dharnas would not eliminate corruption: Sen

Amartya Sen, the Nobel laureate had spoken on the crusader against corruption, Anna Hazare's fast after his fast had entered the 3rd day. Sen who was a former Master of Trinity College, Cambridge University and who currently works as the professor at the Harvard University has voiced his opinions by saying that corruption cannot be fought by merely sitting on dharnas.

He spoke in an interview with the Deputy Editor of CNN-IBN, Sagarika Ghose in an interview saying that one could instead use the time constructively by trying to change the systems that encouraged corruption.

When Sagarika had questioned him what he opined regarding the indefinite fast in the Anna Hazare Movement seeking a strong Lokpal Bill. Ghose asked if Sen viewed this movement as a mere pressure group or a protesting force that would bring a change.

Amartya Sen said that he felt that Team Anna's understanding of corruption, the causes and methods of elimination, were wrong. He said to understand the corruption one has to understand how the system operates. He expressed his sympathy towards the crusader and his justified anger against the system for the deep rooted corruption in the country today but he added that one cannot change the system by staging protests and going on dharnas or tying people to a tree. “Shouting in unison in a group that you don't want corruption is no good. Clearly no one not even a baby wants corruption. The solution lies in pondering how to eliminate the evil. The causes of corruption should be sought and why has it been given so many incentives should be mulled over. They would give a definitive solution,” Amartya Sen said.
