Major-General scandal defames Army

Army had to hang its head in shame yet again after the latest case of an Major-General being allegedly involved in financial irregularities during his service in the operationally crucial Northern Command in Jammu & Kashmir.

He was appointed the chief of Electronics and Mechanical Engineer (EME) wing of the Northern Command headquartered in Udhampur. His name was brought up in the Court of Inquiry as the proceedings are still continuing.

According to the alleged accusation there was involvement of fake bills and fabricated documents to embezzle large sums of money from the allocated Rs 85 crore sum to the EME of North Command.
Army HQ's senior officer said that his name was mentioned in the CoI only as a witness but not blamed. However a few other sources said that the Colonel was being set up after he swore that he had only followed the instructions of his senior official.

The case comes on the heels of a CoI of another Major-General in the Army Service Corps for allegedly having accepted a bribe from a local contractor.

At present, at least one serving Lt-General, two Major-Generals, and several Brigadiers and Colonels are facing charges of financial impropriety in the 1.13-million strong force. In the past few years the Army had been the subject of several cases of corruption and disciplinary charges in several scams often involving the high ranked officers.
