1 dead, 10 injured in Mumbai Metro bridge crash

At least one person died leaving 10 others injured in a tragic accident near the Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro bridge under-construction when it collapsed to the ground. Several others are feared to be trapped under the debris.

The accident occurred near the Leela Hotel, Marol, Andheri (E). This bridge was a part of the Andheri Kurla route for the upcoming Mumbai Metro.
The pillar that collapsed was a part of the Andheri-Kurla metro route. Four rescue vans, two ambulances and five fire engines were rushed to the spot as helpers scurried the place scanning for people who were trapped.

The authorities expressed regret over the accident and assured that providing rescue and relief services were the topmost priority for them.
MMOPL, the joint venture between MMRDA and Reliance, said in a statement that they deeply regretted the accident and the loss that had occurred in the construction by their contractor HCC. However the company clarified the discrepancy in the reported length of the crashed bridge as 15 meters and not 50 meters.

One person, a construction worker at the site of the accident was declared dead immediately after he was taken to the Seven Hills Hospital. Another man's life is also in critical condition after he suffered grave chest injuries.

Five others admitted to Seven Hills Hospital and as many at Cooper Hospital are stable, sources said. The collapsed bridge is part of the much-delayed 12-km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor of the Mumbai Metro.
