A condom manufacturer had decided to add flair to his brand of condoms at the price of the honor of a French city on the river Baise, Condom. The Southwestern town in France had hence ordered a fine of 10,000 Euros ($12,600) for falsely advertising their facts after it had found out that the condoms were originally manufactured in Malaysia and not France at all.
"The Original Condom Company" boasted in the advertisements that its condoms were from the scenic town on the banks of River Baise. However, a court in Bordeaux had ordered the firm to remove the references to the town after it had found that the address mentioned was unoccupied.
Mayor of Condom, Bernard Gallardo, has said that the 7,000 odd residents had other advantages than merely being the site for English-speaking tourists to stop by the sign and snap pictures. He said that they were not hiding their notoriety anymore and that they wouldn't make efforts to prevent people from linking the name to the contraceptive. He also said that retreating that notoriety could have a significant effect on the tourism in the town. Gallardo indicated that such notoriety could actually draw people to the town who could later understand their specialties; its gastronomy and old mansions.
Unfortunate coincidence for the town is that Baise, the banks of river on which Condom is situated is French for the profanity, F-word. Neither the French nor the tourists can stop laughing at the perfect combination of names for the river and the adjacent town.
