L K Advani calls Congress 'draconian'

Senior leader of BJP, L K Advani on Wednesday lashed out at the Congress after the cartoonist Aseem Trivedi was arrested saying that the situation is worse than Emergency. He also mentioned that this was a result of the draconian mindset after the party had experienced failure and desperation.

In his blow he wrote, "India has been independent now for sixty five years. I have always regarded the Emergency period 1975-77 as the worst in so far as suppression of civil liberties and freedom of expression were concerned

"But seeing what has happened to political cartoonist and anti-corruption crusader Aseem Trivedi, I have started wondering is today's political set up worse even than the emergency?"

He also mentioned the legendary cartoonist Abu Abraham who had made controversial cartoons on the issue of Emergency being signed by Indira Gandhi and the  20-point programme soon after the Emergency was declared. He mentioned that Abu Abraham would also have to be behind bars if he the same government had been in the political regime then.

He mentions that "the draconian mindset of the present rulers is born out of failure and desperation".
