After torrential rains had continuous lashed Uttarakhand for more than a day already, the cloudbursts had triggered landslides and flash floods in several areas the state killing at least 33 people while 35 were missing and several others were injured in the hilly state.
Ukhimath area in Rudraprayag district had been the most affected place after the heavy rains had brought down several houses to the ground in the early hours. Several people were killed while they were sound asleep after dozens of homes had been dilapidated due to the rain. Over 35 people have gone missing in the disaster and 15 were injured.
"29 bodies have been recovered so far and 35 persons are still missing," the executive director of the Disaster Management and Mitigation Department, Piyush Rautela said.
Chunni, Mangoli, Kimana, Sansari, Giriya, Brahmankholi, Premnagar and Juatok in Ukhimath area have been completely destroyed.
Rescue operations were launched to help and provide relief to the survivors and retrieve the bodies of the dead as the 120 members army and ITBP personnel had assisted in the operations. A helicopter was also brought to the site in case of emergency evacuations.
Rishikesh-Badrinath and Rishikesh-Gangotri highways have been closed due to landslips triggered by incessant rains.
In another incident of flash floods at Bagheshwar last night, 4 people died as a couple had swept away in Kapkot are while a woman and a man were killed in different incidents in Jagthana and Kharak Tanatoli.
A similar tragedy in Uttarkashi district last month had claimed 28 lives and left 6 missing
