UPA rewards BSP: Likely to amend reservation bill

It seems the UPA led central government is going to reward BSP for their support as the party played a major role in terms of bailing out the government on FDI vote. As per BSP's long standing demand, the UPA government is planning to introduce an amendment bill for reservation of Scheduled Castes and scheduled Tribes in government job promotions, most likely on Monday.

BSP leader Mayawati is the prime supporter of the move and she demands it in exchange for her support in the parliament on FDI vote which made UPA win. The bill seeks to amend the Constitution and will need to be passed by a two-thirds majority in both Houses of Parliament. While the Left has said that it will support the amendment, the Bharatiya Janata Party has not yet made its position clear.

Meanwhile, Mayawati's arch-rival Mulayam Singh Yadav of SP is opposing the move, hoping that their stand will be appreciated by the upper caste Hindus. As of now the parliament is again on halt regarding this quota issue.
