Russian Meteor Blast

Yesterday, on Friday, Russian skies flashed for a second after a thundering sound has shattered glasses in buildings and damaged the walls of the houses in the Urals mountain in the Chelyabinsk region. This rare incident, which happens once in 100 years has left over 1200 people hurt. Over 200 children were among the injured. 10 people have been admitted to hospitals. No fatalities were recorded.

The incident occurred on 15th February, 2013 in Chelyabinsk region, Ural Mountains, Russia and was recorded in several amateur videos. The videos attracted over 19 million viewers in different videos in just a day. The last such incident occurred in Russia in 1908, popularly remembered as Tunguska event of 1908 in remote Siberia. In 1908, a rock that is two-thirds the size of Rhode island dropped and flattened a sparsely populated of Siberia.

DN14 asteroid has also passed closest to the earth under 17,100 miles and it was half the size of a foot ball field, 150 feet. However, the asteroid and the meteor blast were not linked and it was a mere coincidence. This meteor was about 50 feet in diameter.

Upon reaching the earth it blasted upon impact with the friction of atmosphere, like a rock hitting a wall, resulting in a big flash and a thundering sound that shattered windows and walls. The fragments have landed in a isolated place near the mountains and there are attempts being made to recover the fragments.
