China intervenes in Maldives issue

Reaction to the political turmoil in Maldives regarding the former president Mohamed Nasheed seeking refuge in Indian High Commission, China chose to be careful and diplomatic in the intervention. It hoped that the issue would be dealt properly.

The Chinese foreign ministry said that it sincerely hoped that Maldives would maintain peace, stability,  and development while dealing with the issue of the arrest of Mohamed Nasheed who has been seeking shelter at the Indian High Commission in Male. This marks the first time that China made a comment on the ongoing issue in Male.

Nasheed, the 45 year old president who was deposed and on the verge of getting arrested, after a magistrate court issued and arrest warrant, sought shelter at the Indian High Commission on February 13 to evade an arrest after the detention of a chief judge of the criminal court during his term last year in January. India has not reacted to the arrest warrant issued yet. The arrest is allegedly one way to keep him from participating in the run for Presidency at the end of this year.
