Time to cheer. India has won its first gold medal at the ongoing Asian Athletics Championships being held in Pune. On the second day of the championship, discus thrower Vikas Gowda grabbed the medal for India. This brings India's medal tally to 5, including a silver and 3 bronze, placing it in the 4th position overall.
On his fourth attempt, Vikas's throw of the iron disk was marked at 64.90m. This is his first gold at the Asian championships. He has now gained an entry into the World Championships coming up next month. Previously he had won silver in 2005 and again in 2011.
Adding to the gold, MR Poovamma gained India a silver in the women's 400m race and Ratiram won a bronze in the men's 10,000m race.
