The Tamil Nadu Government has decided to free seven people convicted of plotting the assassination of former PM Rajiv Gandhi. This decision was taken on Wednesday morning at a cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Jayalalitha a day after the Supreme Court's decision of pressing for convicted persons release on the grounds that they have spent over 20 years in jail.
All the political parties in Tamil Nadu welcomed the decision of Supreme Court and TN government passed a resolution in the state Assembly demanding commutation of the death sentence to the convicted. Murugan, Santhan, Perarivalan, Nalini Sriharan, Robert Pious, Jayakumar and Ravichandran are the seven members of the Sri Lankan Tamil Tiger rebel group.
