DGP, Mr K. Aravinda Rao ordered the Kadapa district police on Wednesday to go to any extent to keep peace in the by-elections to the Pulivendula assembly and Kadapa Lok Sabha seats.
“Don’t hesitate to open fire wherever necessary to quell violence if any on the eve of the by polls,” Aravinda Rao told them in no uncertain terms.
The orders gain significance in the wake of reports that violence may erupt as the campaign picks up for the by polls. “Yes, I have passed on the orders to the district police keeping in mind the possibility of violence breaking out,” the DGP told media persons Wednesday evening.
“The police have been asked to open fire against those resorting to violence, rioting, throwing bombs, using deadly weapons and attacks and counter attacks by rivals,” he said.
The Election Commission had also asked police to ensure that polls are held in peace and tranquility and told them to get more forces if necessary. Police officials, who assessed the situation said they are in need of 127 companies of central paramilitary forces but ultimately settled down to 70 companies.
