Kalmadi remand extended till May 18

Kalmadi remand extended till May 18Former Common Wealth Games (CWG) Organizing Committee Chairman Suresh Kalmadi and two others, arrested by the CBI on April 25 for cheating, conspiracy and corruption in the award of Games related contracts, were today remanded to 14 days judicial custody by the CBI Special Judge Dharmesh Sharma of Delhi.
 
OC Joint Director General (Sport) A.S.V. Prasad and OC Deputy Director General (Procurement) Surjit Lal are the other two accused who were remanded to judicial custody till May 18. All of them were sent to Tihar jail in Delhi.
 
The court accepted the plea of the CBI to extend the judicial remand of the accused on the ground that some more witnesses are yet to be examined.
 
Prasad, belonging to Eluru in AP, was also a member of the Tenders’ committee of the games along with Kalmadi and Surjit Lal. The committee had awarded a contract to a Swedish firm which in turn gave the sub contract to a Hyderabad based construction firm that brought a loss of Rs.95 Cr. to the state exchequer.
 
The CBI had said that Mr. Kalmadi and his two associates were evasive and not co-operating with the probe agency.
