India won the second Test against the West Indies by an innings and 15 runs at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata today claiming the Test series by 2-0.
Hyderabad stylish batsman Mr. VVS Lakshman was adjudged the man of the match for his unbeaten knock of 176.
Scores:
India 1st innings: 631/7 declared
West Indies 1st innings: 153 all out
West Indies 2nd innings: 463 all out
Resuming the day at 195 for 3 and running behind the hosting team by 283 runs, the visitors continued to make runs as long as centurion Dareen Bravo was there but once he was out, West Indies lost momentum dramatically and were all out for 463 runs.
As the Indians were set to clinch the series with an emphatic victory in the second test, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee suddenly descended on the famed Eden Gardens and felicitated the Indian cricket team.
Mamatha stumped the Indian captain M.S. Dhoni saying that the victory was as much hers as theirs. She handed over the Man of the Match award to V.V.S. Lakshman.
Banerjee, wearing her trademark white cotton sari and rubber slippers, interacted with the players on the ground like a commoner. Seeing the chief minister, the Indian players quickly came out of the dressing room and shook hands with her.
