Congress president Sonia Gandhi is seriously mulling a decision on the demand for creation of Telangana state in the wake of the party’s rout in the assembly by-polls in the state.
Sonia, who is worried over the results, fears that the Congress may lose its existence in the Telangana region if no decision is taken on the issue in the near future. The results have nailed the lies of the Chief Minister Kirankumar reddy and PCC chief Botsa Satyanarayana that the party would put up a good show in the by polls.
According to sources, Sonia is also unduly perturbed over the victory of the BJP in the Mahaboobnagar constituency. “ The party president has reasons to fear that the party may lose further ground in Telangana and Seema Andhra areas to TRS and YSR Congress party respectively,” commented a senior party leader.
It is learnt that the congress leadership has decided to retain its domination in the Telangana region by granting statehood to the area and seeking merger of the TRS with the Congress. “A decision may come very soon. The party leadership will soon call a high level meeting on the issue,” said the sources. (J)
