Several struck dead by lightning, CM declares ex gratia

Nearly 20 persons were struck dead by lightning in several parts of the state on Sunday. The heavy rains created havoc in many districts of the state and lightning claimed 11 lives in Guntur alone. In Prakasam and Krishna districts three deaths have been reported and two deaths occurred in Khamman district and one in Warangal district. Among the perished, most of them were shepherds.

It may be recalled that rain and thunderstorm threw life out of gear in most parts of Prakasham, Krishna, Khamma and Warangal district. Accompanied by gusty winds, rain has sub-merged the chilly crops in Guntur district and uprooted trees in other parts.

Among the dead, two of them actually died much before the rain started. Two women (mother and daughter) in Guntur district were working at a maize field and died on the spot when they were struck by lightning after thunder storms in the afternoon.

The chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy has termed the incident as unfortunate and announced ex gratia to the kin and kith of the deceased.

It is always advisable to return homes and not stand near trees when the violent thunders are heard. (Phani)
