At least five persons died after they consumed spurious liquor in Vijayawada on Friday. The police have identified the victims as Prasad, Durga Rao, Koteshwarulu, K Asu and G Subbulu.

Also, the reports indicate that several others in the city have been admitted to hospitals and are undergoing treatment for consuming adulterated booze. In fact, the situation of one person is said to be critical.

Spurious liquor claiming lives of people keeps hitting headlines every now and then and in Vijayawada the situation is something that’s common. In fact, three such incidents came to light within four months time and the excise department is reportedly to take the issue seriously.

The public are of the opinion that the concerned officials should immediately look into the issue and put a check to the sale of spurious liquor and toddy. Such incidents will cost Congress party dearer. Moreover, by-elections are round the corner and a small negligence of authorities can literally change the fate of the government in by-polls. Therefore, it’s high time the government should realize the same and take stringent action against the excise department.  (Phani)
