As part of the Auction for the upcoming Indian Badminton League (IBL), top badminton players have been auctioned for high prices. This is touted as the richest league in Badminton, costing nearly $1 million.
Hyderabad girl and Badminton star Saina Nehwal was sold for $120,000 to Hyderabad Hostshots. Malaysian player and world number 1 Lee Chong Wei was sold to Mumbai Masters for $135,000. The bid for the Malaysian was the highest at the at the inaugural players' auction.
Upcoming players P.V. Sindhu was sold to Lucknow Warriors for $80,000, while Parupalli Kashyap was sold for $75,000 to Banga Beats. Women's doubles players Jawala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa were sold for $31,000 and $25,000 to Delhi Smashers and Pune Pistons respectively. The bid was below their $50,000 base price as there is no provision for doubles in the IBL matches.
Most of the top 50 badminton players in the world are said to be a part of the Indian Badminton League (IBL) scheduled to be held from 14th August to 31st Ausgust.
