Congress party President Sonia Gandhi has been caught unawares while visiting the US for medical treatment. Close to 30 years have passed since the incident she has been called for has happened. The US court summoned Sonia in relation to the attacks on Sikhs in 1984.
What goes around comes around, which is what Sonia is realizing. She has been issued summons for protecting individuals who incited widespread violence on Sikhs. Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) rights group and a couple of victims had filed a compliant against the party president. Consequently, the US Eastern District Court of New York summoned Sonia.
Surprised with the development, Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi responded that they will take appropriate legal action. Sonia is accused of shielding several congress party leaders including Kamal Nath, Jagdish Tyler and Sajjan Kumar from prosecution. The accusation falls under the Torture Victim Protection Act (TVPA) and Alien Tort Claims Act (ATCA).
According to the complaint, the Congress Party intentionally incided torture, rape and murder on about 30,000 Sikhs in November 1984.
