The government of India is planning to provide its services with mobile governance and soon may make the mobile number a defacto identity of a person. The government wants to give a digital identity to each and every citizen which is unique and authentication. There are about 900 million mobile connections and 700 millions have Aadhar card. Every citizen will be given a digital identity through Aadhar card by the end of next year.
Speaking on the project, RS Sharma, secretary, Department of Electronics and Information Technology, said, “India is a mobile country. Mobile both in terms of the mobility of it’s population and it’s mobile connectivity. If we have to take ICT [Information and Communication Technology] to the people, mobile must be one of the foremost medium to carry the e-governance initiatives.”
Aadhar card, mobile number and bank account will be the three factors of empowerment for a common man, added Sharma. He also spoke about launching e-books in schools and providing wi-fi facility at public places. India's heritage monument Taj Mahal will be wi-fi enabled soon.
