Priyanka Kapoor, a 25 year old aspiring model, was found dead in her apartment in South Delhi, hanging from the ceiling fan.
Kapoor even left a one page note in the room, which read, “To marry him was the worst mistake of my life. The experience has been painful and I cannot take the beating anymore.”
According to the police sources, her husband, Nitin Chawla was arrested on dowry death charges, virtually held his wife prisoner in their residence in Defence Colony.
The girl was beaten up, even when she went out to meet her friends, for a cup of tea and mostly, she was not allowed to move out of the house. Though Priyanka’s parents lived in neighboring Gurgaon, she rarely went to meet them, but was touch on phone.
But on Holi, when the parents repeatedly tried her both phone numbers, the phones were unreachable and that made the girl’s parents, doubt the situation.
Worried over it, the girl’s mother informed to police and left for her daughter’s home. DCP (South) Prem Nath said that, the women had locked herself in a room around 12.30 am on Friday.
Though Nitin and the girl’s mother begged to open the door, she resisted to do and refused food for over 24 hours.
“The team broke open the door … and saw Priyanka hanging from the ceiling fan,” the DCP said. She was shifted to AIIMS, where she was declared dead.
Sources said that, there were fresh cut marks on her wrist, hinting that, she even tried to bleed herself, before hanging. During the investigation, Chawla repeatedly said that, he loved hi wife a lot, but felt in-secured, when she met her friends.
Chawla was earlier married to a girl, and has a 10 year old son and daughter from her. Divorcing her, he later married Kapoor.
“She was happy when she married but a few days later, Nitin started beating her up. That man was obsessed. She once stepped out from her home for tea and Nitin thrashed her. He used to lock her up and beat her up for hours,” Vijay, Kapoor’s friend said.
Chawla further accepted assaulting Kapoor and said that he had to do it, as his wife threatened to leave him. He wanted the custody of his son and wanted Kapoor to raise him.
Kapoor was not ready. “He said he wanted Priyanka to be a good housewife and always remain in the house, in front of his eyes,” a police source said. She was outgoing, career-oriented and had many friends but Chawla didn’t approve of it, the source said.
Chawla further said to police that he put a proposal in front of Kapoor, to move to Meera Bagh residence, as he could not afford the rent of their current apartment. But upon Kapoor refusing it and threatened to leave, the heated argument made Chawla hit his wife.
Upon the complaint of Priyanka’s sister Dimpy, the police have registered a case of dowry death and domestic violence against Chawla.
