Belgium Train Crash: 3 passengers killed, 40 injured

Three passengers were killed and 40 injured in Belgium train crash on Monday morning.

According to the officials, the incident took place when a passenger train travelling at high speed collided with the goods train on the line linking Namur and Liege, in the eastern Belgian municipality of Saint-Georges-Sur-Meuse.

Dozens of people were killed and several were injured. The injured were immediately rushed to nearby hospital.

Belgian railways SNCB said that “A train carrying around 40 passengers crashed into the back of a freight train on the same track. The collision also derailed two of the six carriages.”

He added that "All our services are mobilised and are completely co-operating with rescue services.”

There were around 40 passengers who were in the passenger train when this mishap took place. Fire and police services were immediately alerted and several passengers were rescued from the derailed carriages.

Officials said that the mishap occurred as the passenger train was travailing at a speed of 55mph and was unable to brake.

The mayor of Saint-Georges-sur-Meuse district, Francis Dejon, said the collision had been "very violent".

Dejon added that three people were killed and about 40 hurt, but those numbers could change.
