The two Hyderabadi girls, aged 16 years, from Hayathnagar, who were saved from child marriage last year, have proved their mettle in this years’ intermediate exams.

The marriage of the girls was stopped in the nick of time, as they were under-age. One of the girl, named, K. Sandhya secured 92% marks, to emerge as the college topper in the CEC stream, which has about 140 students. While, the other girl, V. Sandhya secured 88%. Both the girls are studying in the same class at NRI Junior College in Vanasthalipuram, and earlier, were classmates in St Joseph’s school in Turkayamjal, Hayatnagar. These girls, would have discontinued their studies, if their parents had their own way, a year ago.

The parents of V. Sandhya, fixed the girl’s engagement on April 3, 2015, the very day, she was to appear for a Social Sciences paper, in her class tenth boards. However, Sandhya was reluctant to enter into the marriage. Her school friends alerted the teachers and a child rights organization interfered to put an end to the illegal marriage.

A member of Balala Hakkula Sangham, Achyut Rao, said, the Sangam’s members went to the house of V. Sandhya and warned the groom’s party that marrying a minor girl was a serious violation of the law. He further said that the Ranga Reddy Collector responded when the matter was brought to his notice.

V. Sandhya’s interest in studying drove her to write the Paper-2 exam in the same subject. Two weeks later, Sandhya incurred a big shock, when her father committed suicide by hanging himself. Neighbors had made fun of him for the marriage fiasco, said V. Sandhya.
