Eight TN Fisherman Arrested By Sri Lankan Navy:- For allegedly fishing in the territorial waters of the island nation, the Sri Lankan Navy has arrested eight Tamil Nadu fishermen today.

The fishermen were spotted fishing from Nagapattinam District near Paruthithurai, and that is when the Navy personnel of Lanka came and took them to the Kangesanthurai port.

The Joint Director of fisheries department, Nagapattinam district, Amala Xavier, said the fishermen were using mechanized fishing boat. They had been arrested on charges of alleged violation of the International Maritime Boundary Line and fishing in the exclusive zone meant for Lankan fishermen.

The official said their boat was also impounded. In a similar incident, about two days earlier, four fisherman from Pudukottai district and 17 from Karaikal region in Puducherry were arrested by Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly fishing near Neduntheevu in the island nation.

On June 22, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s intervention to secure the release of 20 fishermen from the state and 137 boats, allegedly apprehended by Sri Lankan Navy.

The Sri Lankan authorities have arrested as many as 22 fishermen from the state, since the ban on fishing ended on June 15, said the fisheries department officials.
