Hyderabad Drains Choked With Plastic: A Challenge:- The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has been finding it tough when it comes to the challenges with the drainage facilities in the city. Though there have been enough drains constructed, plastics, polythene and other trash components failed to make a free flow for the drainage. Choking the nalas and drains, they turned out to be places for mosquito breeding centres. With huge dump of plastic, most of the drainages have been left blocked in the city.
As a part of the pilot study held in Virat Nagar, Shaikpet, it has been revealed that one tonne of waste has been evacuated. More than 40% of the evacuated dump comprised of plastic and polythene bags along with other waste and it was only 20% water. Despite of spreading several awareness programs in the city, people are not much bothered and they have been dumping plastic and polythene in drains and nalas. This is sure a challenge for GHMC and they revealed that this would affect the health of the people as they are turned into mosquito breeding centres.
