PV Narasimha Rao conferred with Bharat Ratna:- Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi revealed that the prestigious Bharat Ratna award will be bestowed upon three exceptional individuals: former prime ministers PV Narasimha Rao and Charan Singh, as well as scientist Dr MS Swaminathan. PV Narasimha Rao, who held the position of prime minister from 1991 to 1996, is renowned for his instrumental role in bringing about economic liberalization in India. Charan Singh, a staunch advocate for the rights of workers and farmers, briefly served as prime minister in 1979. Dr MS Swaminathan, a highly esteemed scientist, is credited as the mastermind behind India's revolutionary green movement.

"Delighted to share that our former Prime Minister, Shri PV Narasimha Rao Garu, will be honoured with the Bharat Ratna. As a distinguished scholar and statesman, Narasimha Rao Garu served India extensively in various capacities. He is equally remembered for the work he did as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Union Minister, and as a Member of Parliament and Legislative Assembly for many years. His visionary leadership was instrumental in making India economically advanced, laying a solid foundation for the country's prosperity and growth" wrote Narendra Modi on X.

MS Swaminathan Ji's dedication to the welfare of farmers and his significant contributions to agriculture have earned him the prestigious Bharat Ratna. Throughout his career as a politician and as an MLA, he consistently prioritized the development of our nation. His unwavering stance against the Emergency and his commitment to democracy serve as an inspiration to all. We are delighted that the Government of India has recognized Dr. MS Swaminathan Ji's immense achievements by awarding him the Bharat Ratna. His role in achieving self-sufficiency in agriculture, especially during challenging times, and his efforts in modernizing Indian agriculture are truly remarkable. We also acknowledge his invaluable work as an innovator and mentor, fostering a culture of learning and research among countless students.

The Prime Minister expressed his deep condolences for the demise of Mr Narasimha Rao, acknowledging his immense contribution to the country's development and prosperity. The Prime Minister, who had a close association with Mr Narasimha Rao, spoke highly of his valuable insights and inputs. The government had previously announced the highest civilian honours for LK Advani and Karpoori Thakur.

Mr Narasimha Rao had an illustrious career, serving as an agriculturist, advocate, and a prominent political figure. Throughout his journey, he held various positions, including Minister of Law and Information, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, and General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee. He also served as India's External Affairs Minister. Mr Narasimha Rao is widely recognized for his initiation of crucial economic reforms and his appointment of Manmohan Singh as Finance Minister during a challenging economic period. His remarkable six-time parliamentary tenure came to an end with his passing at the age of 83 in 2004.
