The Madras High Court has fined a school teacher by Rs 50,000 for pinching a boy who failed to do home work. In 2012, Rama Gowri, a teacher at Kesari Higher Secondary School in Mylapore, pinched the cheeks of a Class VII boy for not doing his homework and the boy sustained minor injuries. The boy’s mother Meharunnisa approached the State Human Rights Commission [SHRC] and a criminal case was filed against the teacher.
During the probe, SHRC imposed Rs 1,000 fine to the school for violating the boy's human rights and the boy's mother had to file multiple petitions as the school delayed issuance of transfer certificate. She also filed a fresh case against the teacher in the court but following these many complaints, the teacher too moved court, calling it a harassment.
