Reviving the famous knitwear industry in the south is being planned on a war footing as it is one area where mass are employed. Earlier knitwear from India was a pride to the nation and the most sought after by global agencies, especially the European markets. But with emergence of cheap Chinese, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka competitions, Indian goods are less sought. And this has lead to many industries diversifying. The intelligent survived by diverting their attention to local markets while the hi-flying were at cross roads.

With an idea to revive this sickening segment a conference was arranged in Tirupur the Knitwear hub of the nation, in Tamil Nadu. On  July 28 the conference was organized by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) TEA, in collaboration with the Green Textile movement. Many knitwear industrialists attended the conference.

Initially the conference was to focus on a technology to reduce emission of pollutants while dyeing. "The technology is very simple, involving only the natural factor that is available around us. For example in the mechanical evaporator, we have to burn a lot of firewood and evaporate the water physically, whereas in here, we do not evaporate the water by any external forces," said Raja Shanmugam, Chairman NIFT-TEA.

“The water is poured from the top, it goes through a filter made of some unwanted firewood, therefore the entire process through the water, it automatically evaporates the water, therefore it does not contaminate nor the usage of the firewood," Shanmugam added. (With inputs from internet-AW AarKay)
