In a shocking incident, popular car racer Ashwin Sundar and his wife Niveditha died after their BMW car hit a tree and burst into flames in Tamil Nadu.

The accident took place at 3.30 a.m. this morning when Sundar and Niveditha, who lived in Alapakkam near Porur, were coming back home after meeting a friend.

A video has gone viral on social media wherein the car can be seen in flames next to a tree.

The video has been supposedly recorded by one of the passers-by. The Chennai Police were alerted by the local people.

The bodies were sent to the nearby hospital for post-mortem. Further details are awaited.

FMSCI chief Akbar Ebrahim and former Indian F1 driver Karun Chadhok wrote condolence messages on Facebook and Twitter respectively.

"When we arrived, the fire was on and we did not know the couple was inside. We extinguished the fire in 16 minutes and found them both trapped. The lady's legs were seen trapped. The driver's side of the car was also mangled perhaps making it difficult for Ashwin to move," a fire department official said.
