Too Much Screen Time Affecting Eyesight

Dry Eye Syndrome

Computer, TV, mobile, tablet and e-reader screens have become a part of our life. And with more and more people using these gadgets, the number of people geting affected with eyesight related problems is increasing. Continuous staring at screens can be detrimental to eyesight as it reduces blinking rate and tear evaporation.

According to a survey conducted by  Spectrum Thea eye care specialists on over 2,000 British people, 54.4 per cent agreed to be suffering from symptons of  Dry Eye and Blepharitis, reported the femalefirst.co.uk. The respondents in the survey were in the age group of 16 to 24 years.

The reasearch stated that long hours of reading, watching videos or playing computer games can reduce the blink rate of a person by almost a third. Such reduced blinking leads to tear evaporation at a higher rate that eventually leads to dry eye syndrome and other complications.

Sarah Farrant, dry eye specialist and partner at Earlam said that many people may not take these eye complaints serious. But if ther are left untreated, they become chronic and can even result into permanent damage to the eyes, Farrant further added .

The research was done to understand the effect of modern lifestyle on human eyes and to spread awareness.
