In a temporary solace to the Tata Motors of the Tata Group, the Supreme Court today asked the West Bengal Government not to go ahead with the process of returning the Singur land to farmers which was acquired for making the Nano cars.
Claiming that it is only an interim order, the Supreme Court directed the state government not to return the land to farmers until the Kolkata High Court finally disposes the case. The orders were issued by the vacation bench consisting of justices P. Sathasivam an A. K. Patnaik.
The judges also asked the high court to proceed with the main matter in which the Tata Motors have challenged the new law enacted by the Mamata Banerjee government for taking possession of land and distributing it to farmers who were the original owners.
The judges made it clear that they are not inclined to interfere with the merits or demerits of the case pending before the high court. The court was hearing a petition filed by Tata Motors challenging the order of Kolkata High Court which refused to grant any relief to it.
Tata Motors approached the Supreme Court after it failed to get any relief from the Kolkata high court on their petitions that challenged the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development (SLRD) Act passed by the state assembly for taking back possession of the land and returning it to farmers.
