Low intensity tremors with a magnitude of 2.7 on the Richter scale rocked the Idukki district of Kerala this morning. There are no reports of loss of property or life.
The 116-year old Mullaperiyar Dam, the safety of which has become controversial between Tamil Nadu and Kerala, is located in this district.
Kerala State Electricity Board officials said two more low intensity tremors followed the first tremor which occurred early in the morning. Several parts of Idukki district had recorded 21 mild tremors so far in the year 2011.
The dam was in the news recently with Kerala insisting on building a new dam replacing the present one for safety reasons. However, Tamil Nadu has objected to this saying there is no threat of any sort to the dam. (JUBS)
