TN reasserts right over Mullaperiyar Dam through Assembly resolution

The Tamil Nadu assembly today passed a unanimous resolution stating the state would not give up its right over the controversial Mullaperiyar Dam.

Moving the resolution in the house, chief minister Jayalalitha accused Kerala of adopting deceiving tactics on the issue and misleading the people.

She said the Kerala Government had planned to generate 780 mw of power from Idukki reservoir and wanted more water in the reservoir for the purpose. “If there is no Mullaperiyar Dam, the water will flow to Idukki reservoir,” she said, adding, they can then generate more power.
“The Kerala Government says Tamil Nadu would continue to get the same quantum of water as in the past ever after a new dam is constructed. How can it be possible?” she asked.

The assembly session was specially called to adopt the resolution amid growing tensions between the two states. While Kerala has been seeking to demolish the116-year old dam on safety concerns and build a new one, Tamil Nadu has been opposing the plan saying there is no threat to the dam.

Jaya said in her speech that the Tamil Nadu state had a right over the dam and would not give up its right. (JUBS)
