Wife of Maoist leader Panda acquitted

A fast track court in Odisha has today acquitted Milo Panda, wife of a top Maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda, who has been actively holding talks with Odisha Government over the release of abducted Italian citizen Bosusco Paulo.

Notably, Milo Panda alias Subhashree Das is one amongst the 27 names that the Odisha chief minister announced to ensure safe release of Paulo, who has been held captive over couple of weeks.

After court’s decree, Panda was released from Gunupur Jail in Koraput district. She was arrested in a case pertaining to an encounter between Maoist and security personnel in 2003.  Immediately after her release, Milo Panda spoke to the media. She thanked the court for providing complete justice to her and said that her release had nothing to do with the government.

She, however, had many apprehensions, which she revealed before the media. She feared that she may be arrested by the police yet another time.  It may be recalled that Panda was arrested in January 2010 near Bhuvaneshwar accusing her of helping Maoists. Although that case was squashed by a court, she was  taken into custody in encounter case.

In fact, the police reportedly produced a list of 18 witnesses against Milo Panda in encounter case. The court observed that the charges against her could not be proved. On the other hand, there has been no response from Maoist side, who held captive Bosusco Paulo. (Phani)
