The nation was praying while the special rescue team was carefully reaching the five-year-old stuck in a 70 feet deep borewell the last 86 hours. The mission ended as Mahi was sent for medical assistance in the waiting ambulance, in Gurgaon, at 1.40 pm today. Mahi fell into the borewell last Wednesday in the Kho village near Manesar of the Haryana state. But unfortunately the girl was declared dead confirmed the District Collector. 

The girl fell into the well after playing with her friends on her birthday. The local medical professionals immediately responded and sent in adequate oxygen. However the gruelling summer temperatures and non-fed for the last four days must have had an impact on the girl. As the camera lowered down showed her lying still since sometime.

According to latest updates, rescuers made a headway on Saturday night as they finally pierced a hard rock in their effort to reach Mahi as hopes for her survival diminished by the hour. The hard rock was a major hurdle which the rescuers had been struggling to break for the last two days, Lt Colonel Ashwani Tyagi, who is heading the operation, said. Inspite of the joint effort of a 100 officers from the Indian Army engineers from Delhi, National Security Guard commandos, fire department, police, health and revenue departments and locals, could not keep the innocent girl alive.

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has sought explanation from the Haryana government to ascertain if it was the result of any negligence on its part. However public feel that the incident needs to be introspected by the concerned.

The ugly incident emerges nearly six years after six-year-old Prince was pulled out from a 50-foot borewell in Kurukshetra in a nationally televised rescue mission, kids across the country continue to plunge to their deaths in open manholes. (With inputs from internet-AarKay)
